Malcolm March provides this service alongside a joint venture, with his wife Margaret, running a self catering holiday cottage - Footpath Cottage, Edith Weston on the south shore of Rutland Water. About Malcolm I’m a keen fly fisherman with over 25 years experience, a member of the national Game Angling Instructors Association and licensed as a coach by the Salmon & Trout Association. I hold the highest award recognised by the Salmon & Trout Association as an Advanced Professional Guide and Instructor (APGAI) for casting, teaching and fishing expertise. As part of these qualifications I hold a valid First Aid Certificate, have public liability insurance cover and have been recognised by the Royal Yacht Association as a qualified boat handler. I am licensed as a coachby Sport England and The Angling Development Board I have been vetted and cleared by them to teach children and young people. I am recognised as an instructor by Anglian Water who own Rutland Water, FGrafham, Pitsofrd and Ravensthorpe Reservoirs. Fishing Knowledge Like many fly fishing enthusiasts I started coarse fishing as a young lad, fishing every day in school holidays, less when work and family commitments came along. I had always wanted to try fly fishing but didn’t know how to get started. Then a fly fishing friend convinced me to have a go. After a few lessons in casting on a local field we took a boat out on Rutland Water. It was raining, very windy and felt like being on the open sea, but somehow I managed to catch my first Rainbow Trout and I was hooked! That was over 25 years ago and I’ve not looked back since, fishing extensively on rivers, lakes and reservoirs in the UK and USA. We moved to Edith Weston when I decided to leave a full time, busy career in London to concentrate on fly fishing, with Rutland Water as the main focus. Initially I gained casting and instructor qualifications to widen my knowledge and improve my fishing; but then decided to progress this further to the professional APGAI standard. I now spend several days each week fly fishing from bank or boat. Rutland Water is big and very changeable, and like everyone else I’m still learning. About Rutland Water With over 20 miles of bank and 3500 acres of fishing, Rutland Water is not an easy water. Fish swim! they may not be in the same place as when you last came. Generally early and late season they will be nearer the bank, in high summer in deeper water, but this can vary with the weather and time of day. Local knowledge is a key to success and I am happy to share this with you. When and how should you fish? Are the fish near the surface or down in the water? What flies and tackle to use? Bank or boat? These are all questions I can help you answer. |
